My initial art career focussed on geometrical, hard-edged shaped canvas paintings. During the late 60's after doing volunteer work with Native Americans in Arizona, I began a new direction by interpreting the scenery of the Southwest through a combination of realism, hard-edged definition of areas, and an intense use of color. The multi-colored strata of the Grand Canyon and the unusual geological formations of many areas of Utah and Arizona have been my main inspirations. The paintings, prints and watercolors on my site are the culmination of many years of developing and refining an approach in landscape painting to create what I think of as a hyper-intense depiction of the clarity and color of Southwestern rock formations.
During the last ten years I have been developing a style that might remind one of Persian miniatures, wherein a human figure occupies the foreground area and a geometrical pattern of squares, or diamonds or other shapes is arranged in a grid-like formation in the background. All of these paintings are in private collections and are not at the moment available for viewing.
